Recently, I paid a visit to Angkor Wat, a world heritage site in Siam Reap, Cambodia. As I was very busy with work before our trip to Cambodia, I didn’t do any research before our visit. And it was a very big mistake. We didn’t know what is the highlight of Siem Reap, except for the world heritage site, the old ruins of temples and etc. around Angkor Wat. We didn’t know what is the local food and other places of interest.
As we have visited quite to a number of places in South East Asia, we know very well not to dine at any tourist “hot spot”. It is common that you would be able to find the local food as well as other common international brand restaurants at these tourist “hot spot”. But the price will be higher compared to the price you would pay if you had dine at places where the locals would normally go.
We believe that if we do not even dine at our very own tourist “hot spot” in Malaysia and we could get even better food elsewhere, why should we dine at other country’s “hot spot”. So, in any case, we always treat these tourist “hot spot” as our very last option just in case we couldn’t find good and clean places for food.
While browsing through the internet, searching for places of interest in Siem Reap, we couldn’t help but notice that there are many markets all around Siem Reap’s town. Some opens at night and some opens throughout the day. We came across Old Market and we decided to head straight there to start off our city tour day. As we were staying at Niche Hotel, we took a tuk tuk ride to town which costs us $2/8000 riels per way to the Old Market. I will be posting my trip to the Old Market in my next blog post. Stay tune.
